A Spanish Birthday Celebration - Petit Pau

Image
September 10th, 2015 We quickly learned if you are in a new city near the end of a trip, worn down, and ready for home, a rainstorm would do little to help your mood.  That was where we were in Barcelona. Not that Barcelona was a total wash.  Though I will want a re-do of the city at a certain point.  There were a few moments that redeemed the city in my eyes.  And as always, food was usually the factor. Adele was 100% the reason we ended up at Petit Pau .  She did some TripAdvisoring and asked if I was interested.  We weren't able to get to the Adria Brother's restaurants, so we made plans for a few lunches.   The first (and best) was Petit Pau. Honestly, I didn't know what to expect here.  The rain was never-ending.  And it was enough to irritate two already tired travelers.  But then we walked down an unassuming street and into a nondescript door.  The rain melted away (and so did any chance of my hair being even remot...

Hotel Praktik Bakery - Barcelona, Spain

Image
September 9th, 2015 I really fought for this hotel.  I read an article in Conde Nast Traveler that talked about a boutique hotel with a working bakery in the lobby.   Hotel Praktik Bakery .  The price was within our budget (odd for CNT hotels).  And did I mention fresh baked bread in the lobby??  I saved the hotel on TripAdvisor.  And it was always the hotel I shifted back to when we were talking about Barcelona.  Adele kept finding others.  But I was adamant.  Fresh. Baked. Bread. Even the dog is excited for this place!! Imagine my disappointment when the joy of the fresh baked bread couldn't make up for the hotel itself. Now let me step back for a moment, the hotel was beautiful.  It was hip and shiny and new.  Crisp white lines everywhere.  The hotel was inviting.  Both the smell wafting from the lobby and the minimalist decor.  It wanted me to like everything. With bread and wine the way it goes (acc...

A Spanish Birthday Celebration - A Day in Sitges (Day 10)

Image
September 8th, 2015 I'm not going to lie.  This day was filled with ridiculous moments.  It is the day I look back at with the most fondness.  If you equate fondness and silliness as the same thing. This was the first foreign trip we'd been on that solely utilized a car.  Well, a car we drove.  Though I guess in a way, that isn't entirely correct.  I mean, we rented a jeep on Easter Island , but that was only for a little while.  Plus, there wasn't a chance we could get too lost on an island.  But driving in Spain was different. I previously referenced a written, but unpublished post about our journey to Extebarri .  I still haven't decided if it ever needs to see the light of day.  There were frazzled nerves and short tempers.  Do I want to revisit those memories??  Not really.  The short version of the story was that driving in Spain was harder than we expected.  Sure, we expected to have a GPS that would a...

A Spanish Birthday Celebration - San Sebastian Photos and Cider Houses (Days 7-9)

Image
September 5th - 7th I could write faster about our trip.  But honestly, I am much too tired to do so.  Ok.  Strike that.  I'm much too lazy to do so.  You know, you get back to the grind.  Even if the grind is coming home and collapsing into a heap on the couch while you burn through the DVR that is exploding in amazing ways. Then again, maybe I don't know how exactly to write about San Sebastián. Or both. As I look back, the main reason we were in San Sebastián was for the food.  The glorious, glorious food.  And I've already told most of the food stories already.  Not all, but most.   So how do I tell the story about San Sebastián??  Photos, mostly. Our last day in San Sebastián, we walked up the boardwalk to the main area of the city.  We didn't do much.  We just walked.  We just soaked in the city.  And the sun.  *sigh*  I miss the sun. On our way to the city center...
