A Mighty Big Deal in Panama - The Panama Canal

Image
Friday, June 2nd "Are you going to the canal??" That was the first question anyone asked when we announced we were going to Panama.  It makes sense, really.  Panama is really known for the canal. Except for me.  I knew the Panama Canal was a thing .  But I didn't entirely understand what kind of a thing it actually was. The day before our cruise, we spent a day in Panama City.  It rained and we honestly didn't get a full feel for the city.  As much as I will say we can have a great day despite the rain, it's always a lie.  Rain changes everything and makes you hate the world.  But you put on a brave face as long as you can and you try to duck into buildings and take long lunches to wait out mother nature. You might also have to wear a poncho. We ducked out of the rain and into the Panama Canal Museum in the Old Town district of San Felipe of Panama City.  Adele and I had scoped this out a few days earlier as we Ubered it to m...

My First Meteor Crater - Winslow, AZ

Image
April 3 rd , 2017 This trip came together pretty organically.   I knew I was going to Page.   I knew I didn’t want to drive there (or back) in one day from Phoenix.   The concept of a road trip ended up happening just because I wanted to keep in the 2-3 hour range for any drive.   With those parameters, I only had a few options of where to stay.   Flagstaff was one of those places. The hallmark of any road trip is a side journey.   A side journey could be something as stupid as driving an hour out of the way to stop at a restaurant where Anthony Bourdain featured on No Reservations (which I've done, though earlier than the blog was alive).   Or it could be driving 30 minutes or so in the opposite direction to visit a meteor crater. As I began researching Flagstaff for things to do, I stumbled on the meteor crater near Winslow.   Most people instantly thought about standing on a corner, trying to take it easy.   That was not my th...

One Day in Hobart

Image
Sunday, May 29th We weren't supposed to figure out what to do in Hobart today.  Nope.  Today, we had a tour scheduled.  The goal was to figure out later tonight what we were going to do in Hobart tomorrow.  But our plans shifted on a dime.  The tour company said the weather was suspect today, but not tomorrow.  If we wanted to change our tour date, we could do it without a penalty.  Just like that, we had a free day.  And we were going to make the most of it. The skies were definitely ominous. Laundry Time!! Yeah.  We were going to make the most of it after we did some laundry. Let's be honest.  We'd been going for a week and a half at this point.  And our clothes were a bit suspect at this point.  The good part was that we were in a new temperature zone.  So our warm weather clothes, which had seen better days, weren't needed for the rest of the trip.  But undies and jeans were due for a wash.  And ...
