The Epic Summer Road Trip - Going Home on the TARDIS: Day 7

Image
Saturday, July 11th I broke Elias.  Again. I don't mean to do these things.  It just happens.  We go so hard for so long that I forget to stop and relax.  Not everything has to be done on a trip.  Not everything can be done.  So there we sit, at lunch at Famous Dave's right outside the gates at Cedar Point.  I look at Elias and he isn't saying anything.  And I knew before I even asked the question, "Are you done??" He was.  Then again, so was I. Would it have been different if we would have checked out of the hotel in time to have eaten breakfast with Mark and his family??  Maybe.  Would it have been different if we had gone to the Soak City side of Cedar Point versus just riding the rides??  Maybe.  But we didn't do these things. We quietly ate our food, walked back through the park to the exit, found the car, and began our drive home.  We didn't even have funnel cake. The trip ended with a bit of a whi...

This is 40 - Going Home (Day 6.5)

Tuesday, May 5th The trip home is its own story.  Mostly because it's been almost two weeks since the flight and I'm still pretty angry about the whole thing.  Well, I'm not as angry as I was.  It has been almost two weeks.  I shouldn't still be angry at what happened.  My remnant anger is at the resolution...or lack thereof. I mentioned in a previous post that I had used miles to travel First Class to Hawaii.  I had saved them up for almost 15 years and had finally decided to use them for a purpose.  I don't normally fly First Class.  I mean, I travel a lot, but I try to go as inexpensively as I can because I travel a lot.  So First Class isn't in the budget.  This was a birthday trip that was created based on flying First Class to Hawaii. This is what I was leaving.  I didn't want to leave... Fast forward to my flight home. Well, fast forward to the start of this journey.  And this journey actually star...

Recovering, Saying Goodbye, and Art - The Beijing Experience: Day 5

Image
Tuesday, September 2 Holy lord, I can barely move.  I knew it would be bad after the hike from yesterday.  But...I can barely move.  We set our alarms and the moment I gained consciousness, I could feel the epic ache setting in.  It wasn't just the calves and the thighs and the ankles, but it also included the shoulders and arms.  Why??  Because my arms flailed about wildly yesterday to help keep my balance on the Great Wall.  The flailing about was apparently wilder than I had expected, cause...owwwww... We actually planned today as our "low-key day."  We knew there would be pain after the hike.  And we were also saying goodbye one one of the crew, so part of the day would be spent getting ready for the airport.  There was no way we could have accomplished much today. Our hotel's restaurant was upstairs.  And I could feel every step up and down.  It was nearly enough to forego breakfast.  Nearly.  The ra...

Hiking the Great Wall of China. Yes, Really. - The Beijing Experience: Day 4

Image
Monday, September 1st You guys...I'm never going to be on American Ninja Warrior.  I know this is a huge surprise, but it is also a disappointment to actually realize this.  Because we just got back from a hike on the Great Wall of China, and I can barely move.  When you think of the Great Wall of China, you don't really think it should be hard to walk on, right??  Oh, contraire... Our tour guide was going to meet us at the hotel at 8a.  Breakfast didn't start until 730a.  So we knew we had to wake up and be ready to go.  There was no chance to oversleep.  Which meant I woke up several times in the night, worried I was going to wake up late.  Not the best start of the day, but whatever.  We were ready. So there's this guy at the hotel.  He's a guest.  And there is something about him that we just cannot stand.  There's no real reason.  He's a very important businessman and acts like a very important businessman. ...

Heading Home?? - The Graduation Adventure Day 15

Thursday, June 5th I've stopped writing about the trip home.  Mostly because there are rarely stories attached to the trip.  You get up, get to the airport, wait for the plane, get home, blah, blah, blah.  But sometimes you have to write about the travel home.  Sometimes, things go weird enough that the story needs to be remembered.  Unfortunately, this was one of those times. Our flight home was 1215p.  We were ready.  After the big Disneyland day two days before, and yesterday's day of mostly rest (and awful weather), the knowledge that we were a few hours away from takeoff was comforting.  The bus came at 7a.  Then again at 9a.  Then various other times in the day.  But we didn't care about those times.  We were told to board a bus thee hours prior to our flight.  Our choice was four hours early or two hours early.  We figured, let's do early.  Less of a chance for racing.  The one thing we didn'...
