Sydney Stories - Vivid Sydney

Image
Early June, 2016 When our Travel Agent met the family at Uluru , she said she was "in town" for Vivid Sydney.  I wasn't entirely sure what she meant at the time.  I thought I had read something about Vivid as we moved around the country.  But I didn't really understand what it was.  She was very excited and said she would report back when she arrived in Sydney. When we were in Hobart, I got an e-mail from our agent.  "Vivid Sydney is amazing!!  You're going to have a great time!!"  By this point, I had read a bit more about Vivid, but didn't entirely understand what we would be seeing. This.  We'd be seeing this. The Vivid Sydney website calls the festival a place where "art, technology and commerce intersect."  It began in 2009 and has grown since then.  In 2016, it was a 23 day festival, with art installations, live music and speakers scattered around the city.  Basically, you couldn't swing a dead cat without ru...

Touring New York through Photography

Image
April 20th, 2016 I love taking pictures.  And I love my camera .  Every time I use my camera, I think I need to learn more about the science of photography.  I've tried learning.  I understand the basic concept of f-stops and aperture and such.  But I can't seem to wrap my head around why I want to use a particular f-stop or aperture. Mom even got in on the action.  She bought a Great Courses class for me to try and figure things out. I was excited as I watched the classes.  I felt like I was getting a better understanding about ISO's and such.  Dad inhaled the class quicker than I did.  But he was a photographer back in the day.  He had a darkroom in the house and everything. After going through the first half of the lessons, Dad and I went out to practice our photography skills.  I was ready to put all of my lessons to use.  On a random Sunday afternoon, we went to a local park and started shooting.  After a few ...

(My) Star Wars and the Power of Costumes - Discovery Center NYC

Image
Tuesday, April 19th I don't know how I found this exhibition.  I mean, I'm sure the cookies on my computer tell the tale of a Star Wars Person.  It definitely tells the tale of a nerd.  I can't deny that one.  And really, I wouldn't want to. It's way too dark of a pic, but still.  Han!! That being said, I'm not an insane Star Wars fan.  A fan who knows all of the side characters from the books, cartoons and video games and serious history of the wars and planets that we never saw in the movies.  But I'm not giving any crap to those people who know all of this info.  I just couldn't keep up.  I read the books in the early 90's.  I'm down with the cartoons, started with Rebels early on, still working my way through the Clone Wars.  But really, I was all about the movies. In the winter of 1983, I was seven years old.  We were the house on the block with all the toys.  We had the swimming pool.  We had the At...
