Planes, Trains, Automobiles and Now Boats - The Graduation Adventure Day 12

Image
Monday, June 2nd I think the hotel knows we're plotting against it.  Not the workers in the hotel.  The actual hotel.  Not only are we foregoing the free breakfast for something insanely more tasty, but we've been joking about the mattresses actually being a door with a sheet on it.  So I think the hotel is fighting back.  This is the first night in a long while that I have had an awful night of sleep.  We didn't dawdle this morning.  French pastries were calling and we needed to pick up the phone.  And that phone was ringing at Lacombe Cafe .  Had I known then what I know now, we would have eaten here for dinner last night.  And we would have foregone breakfast every day.  Because, pastries.  And the place itself was really lovely.  It's kind of how I'd like to decorate my life.  Pink ceiling.  Black mirrors on the ceiling.  Well.  Wait now.  If I was decorating my house like this, the ceilin...

Taking it Easy (With Lots of Dead People) - The Graduation Adventure Day 11

Sunday, June 1st So here's a dirty little secret about me.  I'm super lazy.  I know it doesn't seem like it, but in my normal everyday life, all I want to do is to sloth out on the couch, preferably with a glass (ummm...bottle??) of wine.  I don't want to move to even reach for the remote.  I will not lie, on more than one occasion, I have been known to wish for the power of telekinesis.  Kind of like Jean Grey in X-Men (though that didn't end well... or did it ??).  Or I think Scott Baio had that power in Zapped.  No matter what, that's always the power I'd choose.  Because I'm insanely lazy. If you're reading about the silly adventures being had on trips, you might find my laziness hard to believe.  Vacation is one thing.  It kind of doesn't count.  You get up early and go full blast all day and night.  That's vacation.  So what I'm going to say about this moment in the day is going to surprise everyone.  I...

A Newbies Visit to Paris - The Graduation Adventure Day 10

Image
Saturday, May 31st I always needed a do-over for Paris.  It was cold and occasionally snowy when I was there last.  We hit the big places, of course.  But it was cold .   So cold .  And we both felt like we missed out on something.  Plus, Paris is a place you can go to so many times and find new experiences.  Or the same experience.  Because, Paris. Despite being given the hardest beds on our journey (or ever??), sleep was something that came easily last night.  We have been traveling long enough that the need for sleep tends to come over us hard and fast and it doesn't usually matter if we're sleeping on a cloud or if we're sleeping on a front door.  Last night, we were sleeping on a front door. This was our first time with the breakfast in the Hotel Regence Etoile .  Our breakfasts hadn't been great on our trip so far, so our expectations were low, but we were still hopeful.  I wasn't sure if it was a sign that we st...

Training it to Paris - The Graduation Adventure Day 9

Friday, May 30th Our time to London is coming to a close.  There's something strangely comforting about the city.  Something familiar.  I'm sure it could be the vast amount of Sherlock and other BBC/ITV programs that make it across the pond and make me feel like I know the city.  It just feels nice.  Cardiff was almost sweet.  I really did enjoy the time spent in Wales, short as it may be, there was something almost adorable about it.  But Paris...there are a few things that make Paris just a little different. Yes, the language.  100% the language.  I obviously don't speak French.  And even if I did, I think I would have troubles actually speaking it.  There is something about my brain at this point, be it age or just the lack of experience, where I just can't get my mouth to make the words in another language.  I can cobble together Bonjour or Merci, but that's about all.  Last time I went to France with Adele I kept want...

London, Back Again - The Graduation Adventure Day 8

Thursday, May 29th There are a few things I've learned during our trip so far.  I've learned to always confirm you're going to have a free breakfast before booking with Orbitz.  And I've learned if you're going to book a flight or a train ticket or whatever, have the booking coincide with the checkout time. Now you'd think the second part should be pretty self explanatory.  It should be.  Though because we like to get places early, I think I don't think too hard about check out times.  So if check out time is 11a, having a 1p train out of town is going to make for a hard morning.  Which is what happened to us today. Honestly, in the grand scheme of things, this is not a huge deal.  I know what you're thinking...Oh, you have to sit in the hotel's lobby for an hour just twiddling your thumbs while we're all at home not traveling in the UK.  Well, yes.  And remember, you have sunshine and warmth.  So, point to you.  But the waiting jus...
