7 Days to Go - Or is it 6 Days?? I Never Know Which One is Right

One week from today, I hope to see the sunlight. Realistically, I really won't see it until Tuesday, but I know the sun exists in Florida. It sure doesn't exist in Chicago. The problem with the sun not existing in Chicago is that it makes everyone a little grouchy. And by a little grouchy, I mean most people are ready to beat up others just because. I was on the phone with a rep from Panama City who said "it was a little cool here today. 54 Degrees." I told him I'd murder a hobo to feel 54 degrees again. I usually can handle the cold (enough), but the gray...the lack of sunlight...that's why I desperately need to get out of town. To make things worse, there's snow coming tomorrow. Big snow. I thought I read the number 30 at one point (NOT the temperature), but when I saw that, I instantly became unable to comprehend the English language. It's a freaking Blizzard Watch!! Sigh. The bright side...I should be able to work from home on Wedne...

Inauguration 2009 - The Story Part 2 (Tuesday and Wednesday)

Image
Tuesday, January 20th 230a is super early. Crazy early. An early that is just not normal. But there we were, getting ready to leave the house for the Inauguration. We had already considered the day a success when our alarms woke us up. Score!! We got ready and packed in record time. It was time to hit the road for the train station. Now I don’t know how long the trip was supposed to be to the train. 15 or 20 minutes, I think. Parking for the train station opened at 330a. Trains started running at 4a. We were leaving the house at 315a. We thought we were going to be golden!! I stress the word…thought… It was about 345a when we realized something was horribly wrong. One mile before the exit on the highway, we were in the long line to make the exit. Two hours later, we had made it to the garage and parked the car. Thank goodness for WTOP-FM. That station had a reporter in the parking garage we were trying to get to. Every 10 or 15 minutes, he would be on-air saying how there was plen...

Inauguration 2009 - The Story Part 1 (Sunday and Monday)

Image
The idea of going to the Inauguration started innocently enough when Adele said, “I’m thinking of going to the Inauguration.” I’m always one for a trip and figured, why not. There were plenty of starts and stops and wondering if this was really going to happen, but we secured a car (a better car…the Echo would not have worked out too well). We waited patiently for several weeks and had almost given up hope, but then…we had lodging!! Adele’s Sister’s Friend was offering up her house to two (mostly) complete strangers. We had transportation. We had a place to stay. Let the festivities begin!! Sunday, January 18th The trip started on Sunday morning as I left the house at 5am to pick up Adele at her place. Once Adele was securely in the car, we were off. We didn’t bother with a map, because I had the GPS and Adele knew where we were going. Thank goodness Adele knew where we were going, because the main function of the GPS would be the navigation. Sadly, the GPS crapped out about 30 s...

I Like Anniversaries - Both Past and Future

I always have.  It's a way to mark time in one direction or another.  "3 weeks from now, we'll be walking down Main Street USA" (um...I will).  "5 years ago today, I was starting my new job" (not really, but you get the idea).  I have had the nagging feeling in my head that there was something that happened around this time in the past.  Something important.  And then I realized... Two years ago today, we were standing in the cold, with millions of other people, watching Barack Obama become the President of the United States of America. It's still surreal to think that we were there.  Of all of the crazy things that I've ended up doing, this was one of the craziest. So I've dug through the archives and found the two posts I put up on Facebook about the event.  I'm basically using this blog as a trip rememberance for myself (especially since no one really knows I'm doing this...maybe some day I'll post the news to the world).  Th...

A Constant State of Planning

I'm not exactly sure when it happened.  There was always a trip or so in the works.  If I didn't have something to look forward to, I felt empty.  There was no goal.  It was just the same old thing...day after day.  Get up, commute, work, commute, then couch it until it's time for bed.  Repeat over and over and over again.  Ahhh...Suburban Living... Ultimately, I blame Facebook.  Well, Adele, then Facebook.  Adele took a trip to Dubai and blogged about it.  When she came back, I mentioned that I kept up with her journey and loved seeing her daily adventures.  She friended me on Facebook (back in the early FB days...for me at least) and little did either of us know what was going to happen. It was the 2008 Election Season.  A joke on Election Day turned into the first adventure, "Hey, maybe we should go to the Inauguration.  Hahahahaha!!"  Done.  Then it was the thought, "Maybe we should go to the beach one ...
